‘News isn’t truth’ is an obvious statement. It, unfortunately, is often ignored.
‘News’ can be made from whole cloth. Invented quotes, passed along multiple stations, can turn into ‘facts’.
The Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman uncovered the trail (in Hebrew) of one such item (machine translation):
On August 5, Wednesday of this week, a very dramatic piece of news made a miraculous journey. In about 15 and a half hours, it left a dubious Indian X account, passed through an account that proudly bears the word Mossad in its name, even though it is not the Mossad, received a kosher certificate from Channel 14, was embraced by Yair Netanyahu, ascended to a state stage on the Prime Minister’s behalf, landed with the US ambassador to the UN and on Fox News, and then returned respectfully to India, where it had already been reported as news originating from the “Israeli media”.
Shaiel Ben-Ephraim summarized the piece.
- A very pro-Israeli Hindu-fascist account on Twitter/X cited (in Hindi) a fabricated quote to claim that Ahmad Vahidi, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp, had admitted that Iran was developing nuclear weapons.
- Later the same account published another fake quote, again in Hindi, in which Vahedi allegedly said that Iran will keep developing nuclear weapons as long as the US and Israel have them.
- A Twitter/X account named Mossad Commentary posts the alleged quote in English language.
- Half an hour later the English version of the Israeli (pro-government) Channel 14 picked up on that quote and claimed that it was the first time Iran admitted to building a nuke.
- A few minutes later Yair Netanyahoo, the son of Israel’s Prime Minister who lives in Florida, retweets the Channel 14 item.
- Two hours later Benjamin Netanyahoo, the Prime Minister, cites the fake quote in an official speech.
- Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, share the tweet and adds that Iran was “finally admitting what was clear for years”. He then deletes his tweet without explanation.
- Mark Levine, the Zionist propagandist, shares the tweet. Fox News reports it as fact, including with an on-screen headline.
- Channel 14 reports it citing Fox News and Netanyahoo as source.
- Mossad Commentary, the (not Mossad related?) X-account, quotes Channel 14 and thereby closes the loop.
- Israel’s Foreign Ministry spreads the ‘news’ in Persian language.
- The Indian news agency ANI, citing Israeli sources, reports the item in Hindi.
There is of course no evidence that IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi, has ever said what has been claimed. The quote was invented. On purpose.
This is not the first time that such a fake is happening through Netanyahoo’s office. From Bergman’s piece (machine translated):
In September 2024, the Jewish Chronicle and Bild published stories that matched almost miraculously the messages Netanyahu sought to promote at exactly the same hours and days surrounding the hostage deal and the Philadelphia axis.
These are not the same cases, and it has not been proven that the same mechanism or the same people are involved. But the structure of consciousness is similar in a way that is hard to ignore: information goes abroad, receives a disguise as “publicity in the foreign media,” and returns to Israel as external, supposedly independent, evidence for a political claim already circulating here.
Somewhere a false claim is launched by a not credible account. It gets quoted up a chain of ever more credible members of the public until it becomes a ‘news’ item. That item then is quoted by politicians who, most likely, were the ones who secretly initiated the rumor.
The trick is neither new nor is it specific to Israel. In the run up to the war on Iraq the office of Vice President Cheney ‘leaked’ anonymously to the New York Times that Saddam Hussein had this or that hidden weapon. The next day Cheney went on TV and, being asked, ‘confirmed’ that he had too heard about that. The planted false rumor had become an official fact.
Cheney’s could use a very short route for his planted disinformation as NY Times reporting was (falsely) seen as credible.
Netanyahoo, who is trusted by no one, needs longer paths to turn his fakes into facts.
Unfortunately disinformation works anyway. At least in most cases …
